Hitting Pause

Jonathan Fung
Youth Pastor
September 2018

In early August, the VIBE youth group experienced a life-changing summer retreat at Mount Cross in Ben Lomond.

Our theme was “Unplugged” and all cell phones were collected after the church van arrived at the Mount Cross parking lot. This was a challenging moment for many of our youth. During the evening chapel, Pastor Jonathan challenged the youth to stay unplugged and take time to connect with God and each other.

In the midst of an environment of constant entertainment and engagement, how does one connect with God and grow in his or her relationship with Him? How can students take time to engage in seeking personal spiritual growth when their time to focus is almost non-existent? The key is for students to learn to hit Pause.

We embarked on a powerful time of Bible study and application, learning what Scripture says about seeking the Lord amidst the busyness of life. The Pause curriculum taught what the Bible says about:

  • The importance of taking time to pause in order to live a life that makes an impact
  • The importance of prayer in developing and maintaining a relationship with God
  • How to pray to God
  • How to study God’s Word
  • How to be a part of God’s mission to the world around them

Each of the worship and teaching sessions were followed with engaging small group discussions led by the youth mentors.

In addition to the spiritual emphasis of the retreat, we also enjoyed fun outdoor activities and team building. The Ropes Challenge Course was the highlight for many, as they used their strength, agility and stamina to navigate through a physically challenging course forty feet high. Archery, swimming, basketball, game night, free time, and being unplugged from cell phones during the daytime contributed to the VIBE youth group bonding as a family.

The Saturday evening campfire was another favorite, as we made s’mores, told scary stories and went on an evening hike.

The culmination of the summer retreat was during the final small group discussion on "Hitting Play" in order to fulfill God’s mission. Sixth-grader, Lilianna Flores made a decision to give her life to Christ and follow Jesus as her Lord and Savior. We celebrated with Lilianna and reflected on God’s faithfulness through communion.

Thanks to the youth mentors Allison, Matt, Derek, Stacy and Dan, who spent three days giving their time and hearts for the youth. Also, thank you to Dave Lageschulte for driving the church van and to Doug Pilcher for also driving our youth to the retreat.
