God created rest (Sabbath rest) and we are to imitate God
Choose one day of the week for a sabbath rest

THE RHYTHM OF BREATHING WITH GOD

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Genesis 1:1-2
  1. God was present in the formless and void and in darkness. The Spirit (Ruach - Breath) was present before the creation.
  2. The Breath of God is within us, breathe in rhythm with God
  3. Breathe in life
  4. Breathe out what is not necessary
  5. Breathe in light . . . breathe out darkness.
  6. Breathe in peace . . . breathe out conflict.
  7. Breathe in love . . . breathe out fear.
  8. Breathe in wholeness . . . breathe out brokenness.
  9. Breathe in rest . . . breathe out weariness.

THE RHYTHMIC REPETITION OF SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES

Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first days. Then God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters." Genesis 1:3-6
  1. God spoke and gave form to the rhythmic power of the Spirit - Breath
  2. God divided the day into two: Day & Night
"Rhythm is very individual. You can't impose a rhythm on somebody; you have to enter into a rhythm. And people don't have to have the same rhythm...You've got to find the rhythm of your own body, your own life, your own history. Having rhythm means that you live out who you are in relationship to who God is, who Jesus is. So it's more like a dance..." Eugene Peterson

1. Divide Your Day Into Major Rhythms (Parts)

The major parts can be morning, afternoon, and evening. Here's my four daily rhythms. Setting aside a major chunk of the time (Time blocking) to make the most of my day.

  • 1. Spiritual: Focus-time on spiritual connection
  • 2. Personal: My Green Zone - Focus-time on creativity
  • 3. Social: Make social connection
  • 4. Family: Focus-time on family connection

2. Add The Right Practices/Actions To Your Daily Rhythm

  • 1. Start The Day With Reading The Word And Prayer
  • 2. Take A Walk/Workout/Exercise
  • 3. Make the most of the most productive hours of the day
  • 4. Engage with others and build community
  • 5. Eat with your family and friends
  • 6. Pray with your family or End the day with prayer
  • 7. Celebrate God, faith, family and friends.

THE RHYTHM OF WORKING WITH GOD

Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth"; and it was so. 12 And God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the third day. Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also...So the evening and the morning were the fourth day. So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the fifth day. Genesis 1:11:23
  1. God accomplished TWO major things each day.
  2. Work is intended to be partnership with God
  3. You are created for good work (Ephesians 2:10)

Focus on ONE or TWO major tasks to accomplish in a day

THE RHYTHM OF RELATIONSHIP

Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness... So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day. Genesis 1:26-31

Four rhythms of relationship:

  1. Communication: Relationships are built on communication
  2. Connection: We need to SLOW down to stay connected with God so the Spirit can get our attention.
  3. Unity: Without unity your relationship is like noise without harmony.
  4. Community: Communion with God teaches how to love God and how to love others.
