SCFBC Is Me: Ross Payne

Church is not just a building. Church is a community. It is a group of people who come together to grow in their faith, live like Jesus and share His love. We know there are so many wonderful people who attend Santa Clara First Baptist Church and we don’t want you to miss out on getting to know them. Every month we’ll highlight someone from SCFBC, share their story, and give you a glimpse of the wonderful people that make up our church.

Meet Ross!

Are you originally from the Bay Area?
I came here in 1979 from Southern Indiana, where I was born and raised.

How long have you been coming to Santa Clara First Baptist Church?
I first visited about 30 years ago for a few weeks. I’ve been coming regularly now for about 10 months.

What made you start coming to Santa Clara First Baptist Church?
I received an invitation from Helena Evora, who works with the kids’ ministry every Sunday. I knew Helena from walking her dog a few times a week a year or so ago.

What do you do for work?
I’m retired from working in advertising and marketing communications for about 40 years.

Are you single or married?
I’m single and have one daughter, Meaghan, who lives in Santa Cruz.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I volunteer here at the church at least once a week and at the Santa Clara Central Library three times a week. Until recently, I spent almost every day making different types of artwork or doing photography.

Describe the impact your relationship with Jesus has had on your life or a particular event in your life.
I think more about others, am more outgoing, and pray more often. I came to Jesus when I was about 10 years old, so He has been part of my life for about 60 years.

What is your favorite part of Santa Clara First Baptist Church?
The sermons, Bible study, and editing "Celebrate!," the church’s monthly newsletter.

How has Santa Clara First Baptist Church impacted your life?
I now think more about what it means to be a Christian. I’ve also learned several new skills from working with Jerry Cintas on church projects.

What has been the impact of Life Groups on your life?
I read the Bible more and have become friends with other members of the group.

Do you serve on a volunteering team? What do you like about serving on that team?
I serve on the Library Team. I like working with the other members of the group, and doing something that means so much for the growth and understanding of the Christian life.

What makes you do what you do here at Santa Clara First Baptist?
Wanting to be part of a church that’s devoted to helping others and spreading the Good News of the Gospel into the surrounding communities.

How would you describe the Santa Clara First Baptist Church Community?
Devoted to helping others, very friendly, Christ-centered, and especially focused on children’s and youth ministries.
