Book Review & Library Facts

You can find Boxers to Bandits: Missionaries in China in the Lobby "Book Nook" for your reading pleasure. And, if you like this book about missionaries in China, you may also consider reading Gladys Aylward: The Adventure of a Lifetime, by Janet and Geoff Benge.

Boxers to BanditsMissionaries in China, by Mary Graham Reid

This book is an excellent read about what it was like to be a missionary in China from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. The book follows the times and trials of Jimmy and Sophie Graham no relationship to Billy Graham) as they brought Christianity to the Chinese people. The book covers the period from 1889-1940. You will travel with the Grahams as they reach out to the people for Christ - during the Boxer Rebellion, and when warlords and bandits who roved the country back then were struggling for power. The Grahams endured hardships, beatings, and many other struggles as they strove to overcome the superstitions and beliefs of the Chinese during the early pioneering days of missionaries to China. You'll also discover how the Grahams were able to reach the Chinese people for Christ, as well as learn about baptisms and martyrdoms during their time of service. The Graham's granddaughter wrote this engaging story with Stephen Fortosis, an author and professor in Religious Studies. (Reviewed by Susan Goldsbury.)
