October 2019

For the last two months, I've been saving this space to tell you about a very special book we have in the library: Trevor's Place—the story of a boy who brings hope to the homeless.

I think that reading Trevor's Place will get you excited and motivated about going on the San Francisco Homeless Outreach Mission Trip on Sunday, December 1st, in the afternoon and evening.

Trevor's Place is about an eleven-year-old boy who sees a t.v. news program about the homeless in Philadelphia, and persuades his parents to take him to the city so he can give a warm blanket to a person living on the street. His parents agree to help him, and so, on a cold, dark night, Trevor's dad takes him to the city. And carefully watching his son, sees Trevor bend down, look with compassion and respect at the homeless person, and offer him the blanket.

Skipping many interesting details, every year for the next seven years, Trevor and his father go to the city almost every night to take things [a list needed?][or 'to serve'] to serve the homeless.  Literally, in fact, as they serve hot coffee and soup to the persons they meet. And bringing donations of warm clothing from others who want to help the homeless.

What begins with Trevor asking his parents to help him give a warm blanket to a homeless person living on the streets of Philadelphia, becomes a family passion. Then, a passion for their community.

You'll find Trevor's Place in the "Book Nook" in the sanctuary lobby. And, if you have too little time to read the entire book, just read the letter on the back cover. I think you'll be inspired, and want to know more about Trevor's Place.

And, now, back to the story: I wondered what Trevor is doing today. I found Trevor's Place online and had a good laugh. Trevor is now a 47-year-old man, and his "Trevor's Place" is no longer non-profit.  He and his family run a second hand shop; Trevor has a full-time job, and they still help those in need.

To Trevor and his family: Thank you for writing Trevor's Place and sharing your ministry. Thank you for having a heart filled with compassion. And thank you for your example of answering your calling.

To all SCFBC church members and friends:, If you would like to join others for the SF Homeless Outreach on Sunday, December 1st, we'll meet at the church at 3:00 p.m. to pack the donations. On Sunday, October 13, we'll begin collecting cold weather gear in the lobby.

Especially needed are: warm dark-colored men's jackets — large preferred. And large rain-proof jackets. Also socks and gloves, hats and neck scarves, fleece jackets and sweat shirts. Also duffel bags and large backpacks. Hand warmers and protein bars would be a bonus, and so would travel-sized toiletries and new wash clothes. Thank you for your compassion. If you would like more information about this opportunity to serves others, please Jerry Cintas at jerry@scfbc.org or at 408-390-4696. And please save the date—Sunday, December 1st to join us in the San Francisco Mission District as we serve others.
