Romans 1

The Gospel Calls Us . The Gospel Compels Us . The Gospel Convicts Us

Key Text: The gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes; "the just shall live by faith."Romans 1:16-17

1. THE GOSPEL CALLS US - Romans 1:1-7: The gospel calls us to belong to the risen Jesus.

1. v.1 - "A bondservant of Jesus Christ. Paul identifies himself as a servant and then apostle.
2. v.1 "Called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God" - God gives Paul a mission.
3. v.2-3 - The gospel was promised beforehand: God had promised His saving work through the Scriptures.
4. v.4 "Declared to be the Son of God with power... by the resurrection from the dead" The resurrection declares the identity and victory of Jesus. Our faith rests in a risen Savior.
5. v.5-7 "Called to belong to Jesus Christ" The gospel calls people from every nation, creates a new identity: called by Christ, and set apart as His people

Application: The first response to the gospel is surrender: I belong to Jesus.

2. THE GOSPEL COMPELS US - Romans 1:8-17: The gospel compels us to strengthen others, share Jesus boldly, and live by faith.

1. v.8-10 - Paul prays with gratitude - A gospel-shaped life moves toward people through thanksgiving, prayer, and longing.
2. v.11-12 - "That I may impart to you some spiritual gift" - Paul longs the church may be strengthened,encouraged and established.
3. v.15 - "I am ready to preach the gospel" Paul is ready, willing, eager, and prepared to proclaim Jesus.
4. v.16 - "I am not ashamed of the gospel" Paul has confidence because the gospel itself is God's power for salvation.
5. v.17 - "The just shall live by faith" - We enter the Christian life by faith and continue the Christian life by faith

Application: Ask: Who can I strengthen and encourage? Who needs to hear the gospel from me?

3. THE GOSPEL CONVICTS US - Romans 1:18-32: The gospel exposes our sin.

1. v.18-21 - Humanity suppresses the truth, They did not glorify God or give thanks - Sin begins when God no longer occupies His rightful place in our hearts.
2. v.23 - They exchanged God's glory for idols
3. v.25 - They exchanged God's truth for a lie
4. v.26-27 - They exchanged God's design for their desires: Three Tragic Exchanges: God's Glory ? Idols (v.23) God's Truth ? A Lie (v.25) God's Design ? Human Desires (v.26-27)
5. v.24, 26, 28 - "God gave them over" - One expression of judgment is that God allows people to experience the consequences of the path they insist on choosing.
6. v.29-31 - Sin spreads - Sin does not remain private. It damages character, relationships, families, and communities.
7. v.32 - Sin becomes approved - The final stage is not only practicing what is wrong, but celebrating and approving it

Application: Romans 1 does not invite us to look down on others. It prepares us for Romans 2-3: all of us are sinners, and all of us need the same Savior.

• 1. Have I surrendered my life to Jesus as His servant?
• 2. Who is God compelling me to strengthen, encourage, or share the gospel with?
• 3. Where have I exchanged God's glory, truth, or design for something I desire more?
