Spiritual Discipline At Home
Sunday February 28th, 2021 - Pastor Wungreiso Valui
Ruth 1:1-18

THE PASSAGE

"But Ruth said: 'Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, And there will I be buried. The Lord do so to me, and more also, If anything but death parts you and me.'" -Ruth 1:16-17
"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'" -John 14:6

THE MESSAGE

The practice of spiritual discipline at home is to find God at home in your everyday life. Look To Jesus. He is the way to life and His practices and core activities are essential for our spiritual life.

WHY THIS MESSAGE

"Rust, Rot, and Rut" in your life can be a direct result of a lack of spiritual discipline.

"For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come." -1 Timothy 4:8

Spiritual disciplines are spiritual exercises that help us to focus on God.

Reading Scripture, Fasting, Praying, Humility, Fellowship, Gratitude, Compassion, Public Worship, Meditation, Serving, Simplicity, Solitude, Submission

"But Ruth said: 'Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you.'"

  1. Naomi did not want to burden her daughter-in laws with her sorrow.
  2. Naomi was unselfish. She wanted her daughters-in-law to go live their own lives.
  3. Naomi's character won the affection of Ruth.

The practice of the spiritual discipline of "Submission" is the path to self-fulfillment.

  1. Submission frees you from self-pity, self-absorption, and from not getting your own way.
  2. Jesus submitted to God and He gave Jesus the name that is above all names.
  3. Practice submission at home. Submission is not age or gender specific.
  4. "Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ." -Ephesians 5:21

The practice of the spiritual discipline of "Worship" is our human response to God's nature and His divine initiatives.

  1. Jesus said, "You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve Him only."
  2. Make worship part of the core activity at home.

CAUTIONS FOR YOUR SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES

  1. Do not make spiritual discipline into a rule, a law.
  2. Do not make spiritual discipline a holy exercise of the super Christian.
  3. Do not view the discipline as righteous/virtuous in themselves.
  4. Do not center on the discipline itself, rather center on Christ.
  5. Do not elevate one discipline over the other.
  6. Do not confine spiritual discipline to a set list.
  7. Do not replace experience with the study of disciplines.
