Restore Your Faith
Sunday April 25, 2021 - Pastor Wungreiso Valui
John 21:15-17

So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Feed My lambs."

He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Tend My sheep."

He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You." Jesus said to him, "Feed My sheep." - John 21:15-17

The Resurrection of Christ is God's ultimate plan to restore the broken world, restore the broken people in it, and restore all who are lost. Jesus manifested love and empathy to heal and restore.

How is your spiritual health?

So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Feed My lambs." - John 21:15

"DO YOU LOVE ME MORE THAN THESE?"

To be loved, the first step is to love Christ.

  1. Shame says you are worthless; love says you are worthy.
  2. Shame says you are weak, flawed, and unworthy of love, and causes you to withdraw, hide, stay silent, and live in secret.
  3. Love recognizes your value, reclaims your identity, and acknowledges your self-worth.
  4. Jesus' question "Do you love me more than these?", comes with a clear direction: "Feed My lambs."

1. Shame And Guilt:

Shame Researchers differentiate shame and quilt this way: Shame means, "I am bad." Guilt means, "I did something bad." There is a vast difference between the two.

  1. Shame keeps people from realizing their potential. Shame destroys hopes, dreams, and alters destiny.
  2. Shame makes you run from God because of our fearful heart,
  3. Shame erodes self-confidence.
  4. The Resurrection heals and reverses the damages done by Sin.
  5. True service comes from the heart, not the hand ("Do you love me?").

He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Tend My sheep."- John 21:16

2. DO YOU LOVE ME?

To love others, you must first love Christ.

  1. Shame names and blames; love manifests empathy and compassion.
  2. Shame is an oppressive tool to gain control, to have power over others through humiliation and denigration.
  3. Love is redemptive and empowers others by inspiration.
  4. Jesus' question "Do you love me" comes with a purpose: "Tend My sheep."

Name and shame culture:

Love is more excellent than anything else (1 Cor. 13:13).
Shaming people spawns destructive fear and causes them to try to cover up their mistakes rather than to seek help.

  1. Loving Jesus is better than anything.
  2. Love is the first fruit of the Spirit to be found in all who follow Christ and name him as Lord - the world will know we are Christians by our love..
  3. We are called to be like Christ, to love broken people, which is all of us, really.
  4. Jesus did not blame, name, and shame others; He instead always manifested empathy and compassion.

He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You." Jesus said to him, "Feed My sheep." - John 21:17

3. DO YOU LOVE ME?

To be a follower of Jesus, you must first love Christ

  1. Shame seeks approval, whereas love affirms.
  2. Shame says, "I will love you IF"... with a condition.
  3. Love is showing you that you are loved unconditionally.
  4. Jesus' question "Do you love me?" comes with an instruction, "Feed My sheep."

Unconditional love:

There is a great need to let people know that they are loved unconditionally.

  1. The world says, "I will love you IF" -
  2. To be restored, we cannot avoid the poignant question Christ our Lord asks us, "Do you love me?"

Do you love me?

Not everyone may be qualified to pastor, teach, and feed the sheep -
But all followers of Jesus can from gratitude show their love to the Savior
Unconditional love redeems, restores, and delivers people from shame through Christlike empathy and compassion.
