John 20:19-20

The Message:

Confront Your Fears. Confronting your fears by confronting the truth can bring you peace and joy.

Action Plan

Feed your faith instead of your fear.

The Outcome

To experience joy, which is one of the most powerful human experiences.

The Context

Then, the same day at the evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, "Peace be with you." When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. (John 20:19-20)

The Problem

Fear is one of the most intrinsic human emotions. This is a big problem. Why? Human beings are created to rejoice. And joy can be a big part of the solution to overcoming fear.

The Solution

There are three reasons why the appearance of Jesus after the resurrection should bring joy to you.

• 1. Jesus Is The Giver of Joy
• 2. Jesus Is The Center of Joy
• 3. Jesus Has The Message of Joy

1. Jesus Is The Giver of Joy

"The first day of the week"

1. The Lord comes to us gladly
2. He came to those who were unworthy of his appearance

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. Revelation 3:20

"The doors were shut"

1. Two sides of being shut-in
2. Shut-in for fear
3. The disciples were not ready for the Lord's appearing
4. They were shut in for the fear of the Jew
5. Shut out the world
6. The disciples shut out the world. They shut out the voices of the world.
7. The followers of Jesus shut in together. Joy is found in Jesus.

   But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. John 17:13

8. Shut out the word and shut-in with Jesus to upgrade your faith
9. If you are everywhere you are going nowhere. Joy is within you.

2. Jesus Is The Center of Joy

"The disciples were assembled"

1. The Lord is not reluctant to show where people are gathered
2. Jesus is glad to show up individually
3. Jesus is glad to show when people gather as a body of Christ

   For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them." Matthew 18:20

4. You may think you are not in the best condition to receive Jesus
5. But Jesus is glad to show up for the cowardly, unfaithful, and the unworthy.

   "For fear of the Jews"

6. The disciples fear the Jewish mob and do the same thing they did to Jesus
7. Jesus does not despise you because you had fear last week or you are experiencing fear right now.

   I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. John 14:18

   I am He who lives, and was dead. Revelation 1:18

8. You may be here this morning with fear that you cannot shake off
9. Let Jesus turn your fear to gladness

   "Jesus came and stood in their midst"

10. Jesus took the position that the disciples solely needed.
11. There was a void in the room and only Jesus could fill the void.

    "These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full." John 15:11

12. Only Jesus can fill the voids in your life
13. He can fill the void when you allow Jesus to take a position, the rightful place, Jesus is the center of all of your needs.

Jesus Has The Message of Joy

"Peace be with you"

1. Peace is the highest gift the resurrected Christ can give to His followers.
2. Jesus secured peace both in the invisible and the visible world.

   Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." John 14:27

3. Where there is peace, there is rejoicing
4. There is peace and joy for you in the Lord today.

   "He showed them his hands and side"

5. Jesus holds you close to His hand.
6. Your names are written in his hands. You are bought by the precious blood that flows from His sides.

   "Rejoice because your names are written in heaven." Luke 10:20

7. Our sins are engraved in his hands and sides forever.

   "The disciples were glad"

8. The permanent and precious gift Jesus gave was the reality of His person.
9. Jesus banished all the fears of the disciples.
10. His blessed presence created instant gladness and intense joy.

    "Rejoice in the Lord always" Philippians 4:4,

    Rejoice always.1 Thessalonians 5:16

11. God created us to rejoice in the Lord always

The Good News

Jesus is glad to meet you where you are.
Jesus met the disciples where they were and gave them peace.
It is a precious thing to realize the actualness of Jesus.
The eternal existence of Jesus is real because of the resurrection.
