Rest
The Gift of Rest
Sunday November 20, 2022 - Pastor Margareth Valui
Matthew 11: 28-30

THE MESSAGE

Sabbath rest is a gift and Jesus is the ultimate source of rest

28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden,

JESUS GIVES US A GRAND INVITATION TO COME AND REST

Come to Me: Retreat and Recover (With Jesus)

  1. Genesis 2: 2-3 On the seventh day-with the canvas of the cosmos completed-God paused from His labor and rested. Thus God blessed day seven and made it special-an open time for pause and restoration, a sacred zone of Sabbath-keeping, because God rested from all the work He had done in creation that day. (The Voice)
Q. What activities are restorative to you?

28b and I will give you rest.

JESUS IS THE ULTIMATE SOURCE OF REST

I will Give: Remember (Only Jesus can give true rest)

Q. When was the last time you allowed yourself to just drink in the reality of who God really is?

29a Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart,

JESUS INVITES US TO LEARN TO REST FROM HIM.

Take my yoke and Learn: Receive (Sabbath rest is a gift)

Q. What good things do I pass over daily in my helter-skelter rush through life?

29b and you will find rest for your souls.

JESUS OFFERS DEEP REST

You will find: Reward (The reward is deep rest)

  1. What we need isn't an escape from that weight, but a way to carry it with ease and joy. That's what Jesus offers - a way to carry the weight of life with a straight back and smile on your face.
  2. Jeremiah 6:6 "you will find rest for your souls" when Jerusalem was under siege.
Q. When was the last time you felt deeply rested?

30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

JESUS LIGHTENS OUR BURDEN AS WE YOKE WITH HIM.

Easy And Light: Rest (Jesus is the ultimate source of rest)

Q. Are you practicing Sabbath based on the old yoke of legalism or are you allowing Jesus to yoke with you as you take Sabbath rest?

Action Steps:

  • 1. Retreat: Reflect and meditate on God as your source of rest.
  • 2. Recover: Pick one simple act of delight to do and recover
  • 3. Restore: Practice a full day of rest to restore.
