The Mindset of Gratitude

Philippians 2

THE BIG IDEA

We'll explore the humility of Christ as the ultimate example of gratitude and how adopting a similar mindset can transform our lives.

THE CONTEXT

In Philippians 2, gratitude is exemplified through humility, selflessness, and the willingness to serve others. Believers are encouraged to follow the example of Christ in their relationships and service, acknowledging that God is at work in them and that their actions should reflect the love and grace they have received.

Philippians 2:1-4
Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

I. GRATITUDE LIKE-MINDED WITH JESUS

The apostle Paul implores us to embody the spirit of gratitude and like-mindedness with Jesus Christ.

Spirit of Gratitude: Fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind - Philippians 2:2

  1. Strive for unity and like-mindedness within the community of believers. This unity should be characterized by the Spirit of gratitude.

Attitude of gratitude: Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others v4

  1. Set aside selfish ambitions and conceit, replacing them with humility and genuine concern for others.

Gratitude like-minded with Jesus: Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus v5

  1. Jesus humbled himself to serve others, always placing their interests before his own.

Gratitude, aligned with the teachings of Jesus is to strive for like-mindedness with Jesus through selflessness.

Cultivating a Gratitude Mindset: Balancing Neediness and Mindfulness

"Work out your salvation with fear and trembling" v12
  1. Philippians 2:12-13 advises us to "work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose."
  2. Individuals should take responsibility for their own growth and development while recognizing that they are not alone in their efforts.

Balancing Neediness: Gratitude can help you strike a balance between acknowledging your needs and avoiding neediness. While it's important to recognize and express gratitude for the support and blessings you receive, it's equally important not to become overly dependent on others.

  1. Neediness often refers to a state of emotional dependency, where an individual relies heavily on others for their emotional well-being and self-esteem. This can divert one from experiencing gratitude.
  2. Mindfulness is a mental state characterized by awareness of the present moment without judgment. This can lead to experiencing gratitude.

II. THE MINDSET OF JESUS: Jesus was NOT needy

Philippians 2:6-8 in the Bible provides insights into the idea that Jesus was not needy.

  1. Divine Nature: "Being in the form of God" According to Philippians 2:6, Jesus was not dependent on others for His existence or well-being.
  2. Equality with God: "To be equal with God" -Jesus was fully secure in His divine status and did not have any need to assert it.
  3. Self-Emptying: Philippians 2:7, Jesus emptied Himself, taking on the form of a servant. This act of self-emptying "kenosis," does not indicate neediness but rather a deliberate choice to humble Himself for a greater purpose.
  4. Humility as Gratitude: Form of a servant (Philippians 2:7) Jesus was willing to serve and sacrifice for the greater good can be seen as an expression of gratitude for the opportunity to fulfill His divine mission.
  5. Obedience: obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (Philippians 2:8). Jeus' obedience was an expression of His mission and love for humanity, not a result of need or weakness.
  6. Obedience as Gratitude: Jesus' obedience to the point of death on the cross (Philippians 2:8) can be interpreted as an act of gratitude towards God's will and the salvation of humanity.

III. THE MIND-SET OF GRATITUDE

Christ's Example of the Mindset of Gratitude

A. Humble Thankfulness:

Philippians 2:3: "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself."

  1. Have a mindset of gratitude by emphasizing humility and the recognition of the worth of others.

B. The Mind of Christ:

Philippians 2:5-7: "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men."

  1. Christ's humility and willingness to serve.

C. Obedient Gratitude:

Philippians 2:8: "And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death-even death on a cross!"

  1. Jesus' obedience to God's plan, even unto death, can be seen as an expression of gratitude for the divine mission entrusted to Him.

D. Thankfulness in Service:

Philippians 2:14: "Do all things without complaining and disputing."

  1. Maintaining a grateful mindset involves avoiding complaining and arguing, focusing on the positive aspects of service and obedience.

E. Exaltation and Gratitude:

Philippians 2:9-11: "Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow."

  1. The exaltation of Jesus by God can be seen as an acknowledgment and reward for His humility, sacrifice, and obedient service.
  2. A reminder of the blessings that can come from a mindset of gratitude.

Gratitude For A Faithful And Like-minded Companion

1. Timothy: Philippians 2:19-24

In Philippians 2:19-24, the apostle Paul expresses his deep gratitude for Timothy and the role he plays in the ministry and his gratitude for a faithful and like-minded companion. Sending Timothy:

  1. This act of sending Timothy is an expression of gratitude in itself.

Like-Minded and Sincere Care:

  1. This characteristic is a source of gratitude because it's rare to find individuals who selflessly prioritize the needs of others over their own.

Proven Character:

  1. Gratitude arises from knowing that you can rely on someone with a tested and trustworthy character.

2. Epaphroditus: Philippians 2:25-30

God's Mercy:

  1. Epaphroditus was seriously ill. This recognition of God's intervention in a time of need is a source of gratitude, as it highlights the divine care and protection.

Receiving Epaphroditus in the Lord:

  1. The importance of receiving and welcoming fellow believers with joy and gratitude, recognizing their contributions to the faith community.

Esteeming Such Men:

  1. Gratitude is expressed through the recognition and appreciation of those who have sacrificed and served selflessly for the work of Christ.
