Matthew 21: 1-11

Jesus enters Jerusalem as the Messiah | Matthew 21: 1-11

HOSANNA: The word "hosanna" comes from the Hebrew phrase "hoshi'a na," which translates to "save now" or "save us, we pray".
The phrase "Hosanna" is rooted in Psalm 118:25, Save now, I pray, O Lord; O Lord, I pray, send now prosperity.

  1. In what area of your life are you saying Lord, save me now!?
  2. When, where, and how do you run to God?

1. HOSANNA TO THE SON OF DAVID! Matthew 21: 9a

"Son" is a term of Descendant in the context of the Old and New Testaments. Messianic Expectations: In the time of Jesus, many Jewish people believed that the Messiah, a divinely appointed leader, would be a descendant of King David, who was a powerful and revered figure in Israelite history.

2. BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD! Matthew 21: 9b

Biblical Context: Psalm 118:26.
Psalm 118 is a Hallel (praise) psalm, likely written by David to be sung during Passover and other Jewish festivals, celebrating God's deliverance and mercy Jesus represented His Father very well. He came to do the work of His Father.

  1. How do we represent our Savior and the Father?

Matthew 23: Jesus Laments over Jerusalem

38 See! Your house is left to you desolate; 39 for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!'
  1. Are we willing to acknowledge the name of Jesus with our mouths and actions?

3. HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST! Matthew 21: 9c

The phrase "Hosanna in the highest" is used in Matthew 21 as a cry of praise, a prayer for salvation, and a recognition of Jesus' role as the Savior. We say Hosanna because there is hope that Christ is coming and He will reign eternally.

Matthew 9: 11-13. We are all broken. There is hope in desolation because the Gospel gives us Abundant Life.

  1. How do I live as a person with an abundant life, regardless of my situation?

Challenge Question:

  1. If Jesus walked into your life today, how would you welcome Him?

Application:

  1. Acknowledge Jesus as your Messiah, your Savior.
  2. Live as people saved by the Messiah.
  3. Live as people with abundant life
