Books

Nooks, Kindles, CDs, and books...some of us have tried them all for reading our favorite fiction and non-fiction. Which one do you use the most for your reading?

I'll have to admit, I'm of the generation that likes a printed BOOK better. But, the Nook or Kindle are nice for traveling because you can carry all of your books on one small device without the weight of carrying so many books. But WOW, Nooks and Kindles sure do tire my eyes out. I forget to blink and then get dry eyes. At least when you turn a page in a printed book you remember to blink.

Oh, I love the children's books that I've read to my children and to my grandchildren. We have fun with the pictures because we can "see" the stories as they progress. I have the great memory of teaching one of my grandsons how to read the book before he knew any letters or words. He thought I was a little goofy when I asked him to read it to me. So we looked at the pictures and told each other the story. He caught on quickly as we held that colorful, creative book in our hands while he was sitting on my lap.

In the future, I can hardly wait to give my granddaughter's favorite book back to one of her children so we can sit and read together. Oh my goodness, and my three children and I used to love reading and memorizing the poems from Where the Sidewalk Ends, which suited our fancy at the time. They still remember the poems.

I have very good "book memories" and I hope you do too! My dad read to my brother and I every night before bed. He started the tradition: no, maybe not, because he said his father read to him. This is one of the reasons that the Library Team gets books for the SCFBC library: So that your family can check them out for FREE. And another reason we collect books and other materials is to give them away at H.O.P.E Silicon Valley (held on Sunday, July 26th, 2020), so  others have the opportunity reading to their children and grandchildren.

While you often see and hear the media say no one reads anymore, I don't think that's true. We need to read to children so that they can see how important it is to be a life-long learner. WE adults also need to thoughtfully choose what we read in order to make the right choices in our lives, rather than just reading what is spoon-fed to us through the media. Reading helps us be better people, Christians, parents, citizens, employees, conversationalists, and decision-makers.

PLEASE use and enjoy the SCFBC Library more.
